The theme for this school year is “Blessed to Serve”. In the upcoming months our 3rd grade class will have many opportunities to serve others. The theme verse (our Memory Work on August 24-28) from 1 Peter 4:10 reads, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” It will be wonderful to see all the ways your children will be able to help and serve others this year at Zion!
Information for the upcoming week:
Back to School Night: Come Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in my classroom to hear about 3rd grade procedures and expectations. There are 3 sessions that night you can choose to attend (6:30, 7:00, or 7:30). Please email me with any questions about Back to School Night.
What we will be focusing on next week in class:
Religion: In our new Bibles (yay!) we will explore how the Bible is divided into 2 Testaments and create a “Creation Poster” after finding and highlighting the story of Creation in our Bibles! Some children wanted to bring their Bibles home to show their family which is so exciting! Please make sure they return on Monday morning! Thanks!
Language Arts: We will review how to print the letters “I”, “L”, and “T”. We will also explore nouns, common and proper. We will learn about the beginning stages of the narrative writing process. Narrative writing is our focus for the 1st quarter. We will practice spelling our classmates’ names during our Word Work time at the start of each day. We will focus on the vocabulary words that have come up in subject studies this past week: genre, elapsed, apostle, simile and narrative. Next week the students will be assessed on these five vocabulary words.
Math: We will show and estimate time to half hour, explore the commutative property of addition, estimate length to the nearest inch, and identify the properties of a rectangle.
Reading: We will focus and model how a Reading Conference needs to occur between a student and teacher, we will looks at different ways to preview texts, and distinguish the difference between fiction and non-fiction.
Science: This past week we enjoyed doing some STEM activities. We will do STEM activities 2 times a month. The students had a blast! We will start this week by doing CLOSE readings of our Science textbooks. A CLOSE reading helps us understand and dig deeper all the wonderful information that can be found in a page, a paragraph, even a sentence!
Art: We will examine the artwork of Frank Stella and use protractors and compasses to create similar artwork.
Hope to see you on Tuesday night! Have a wonderful weekend!
